Martin Zapater, a Zaragoza businessman, had been a friend of Goya's from the time they schooled together as children. it is through Goya's letters to Zapater that much has been gleaned concerning both Goya's personality and his political thought. Many of these letters were later censored by Goya's grandson Mariano.
