Famed American writer and poet from Richmond Virginia, considered the father of the American short story, beginner of the genres of "detective fiction" and "science fiction."

Though born in Boston, Poe was principally raised in Richmond, though his childhood also included five years in Scotland and in London. The frequent moving seems to have set forward the trend which was followed through the rest of his life
